Programme Overview

The Athens MA in Ancient Philosophy is an intensive one-year graduate programme offering advanced academic training and specialized research in Ancient Philosophy.

Established through the collaboration of major Greek universities, the programme promotes the systematic study of Ancient Philosophy from the Pre-Socratics to Late Antiquity.

The curriculum covers major philosophical areas including metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, ancient science, and the historical reception of Ancient Philosophy.

Courses are taught by professors from Greek universities as well as visiting scholars from international institutions, preparing students for independent research and doctoral studies.

Curriculum Structure

The programme consists of two academic semesters followed by a Summer Term dedicated to the MA thesis. Students complete five compulsory courses and one elective course, each corresponding to 10 ECTS credits. Each course is taught through weekly 3-hour in-person sessions over a 13-week teaching period.

Master’s Thesis

During the Summer Term, students prepare and submit an MA thesis corresponding to 15 ECTS credits.
The thesis enables students to undertake independent research in a specialized area of Ancient Philosophy.

Admissions & Application Requirements

Applications are submitted through a rolling admissions process divided into two phases.
• Phase I: 1 February – 31 March
• Phase II: 1 April – 30 June
Students from countries requiring a visa are encouraged to apply during Phase I.
